Maria Chiran Awarded ‘Cross of Honor’ by The Holy Papa Pope Francis

Maria Chiran (71), a prominent educationist and former headmistress of Corpus Christi High School, has been awarded ‘Cross Of Honour’ by The Holy Father Francis for her life long dedication  and tremendous contribution towards church and society.  ‘Cross of Honor’ is the highest honor that The Holy Pope can bestow with.


Maria Chiran is from Jalchatra Parish under Tangail district in Bangladesh. She was called, by the catholic church, in teaching profession in 1980 and served last three decades. He retired in 2010. She volunteers local and national women’s rights groups and works for the empowerment of indigenous women.

Apostolic Nuncio His Excellency Arch Bishop George Kocheri DD has handed over the award to her on behalf of The Holy Father at Mymensingh Cathedral in presence of His Excellency Bishop Ponen Paul Kubi CSC DD, priests, sisters and hundred of lay people from Mymensingh Diocese.

Subhash Jengcham (74), a prominent writer and Garo intellectual, has also been awarded ‘Cross Of Honour’.

Maria Chiran awarded for her tremendous contributions in education, social and religious development to the Garo community and Catholic Church. Maria has written some invaluable articles on the Garos too.

Earlier in 2009, Maria Chiran has also been awarded by Abima Garo Youth Association (AGYA) for her tremendous contribution in Education & Leadership.
